Kauê Garcia

Brasil

(1984, Campinas, Brasil)

Originating in the New York suburbs during the 1970s, the hip-hop movement found the ideal scenario for the expression of its culture in the streets of Bronx. Seeking to amplify the voice of the city’s fringe, the movement saw the battles of the MCs as a way to express itself through quick, sarcastic and questioning rhymes.

Resorting to some elements from this cultural movement, in Batalha [Battle], Kauê Garcia reconstructs the famous debate between the philosophers Noam Chomsky and Michel Foucault, in 1971, on a Dutch TV channel, where in a format of questions, replies and rejoinders the philosophers argued about the symbolic space of the production of knowledge and meaning.

Based on samples – a technique used by the DJs to cut and paste segments of songs and speech – Kauê Garcia mixes the discourses and bases of rap, to create his own battle of MCs. By remounting the ideas of disobedience to the norm, notions of justice in societies and questions related to the oppression of classes, along with other points that are at the focus of our interests, the artist creates a counterpoint between erudite dialogue and street culture, extrapolating the normative meanings to rethink the heritage of the world that preceded us, which winds up designing the state of the present.
